William F. House D.D.S., M.D. is called “the Father of Neurotology”—the treatment of inner ear disorders. In this fascinating memoir, he describes his struggles to introduce new ideas to ear surgery and how medical professionals were always slow to accept his “radical” approaches. He tells of his dental and medical training, including time at Los Angeles County Hospital. Seven chapters each describe a problem in the treatment of ear disease and hearing loss and how he developed solutions. These chapters give insight into the thought processes of this giant in his field; including his use of the operating microscope, development of surgical approaches to remove tumors on the hearing nerve, a surgical treatment for Ménière’s disease that enabled one of his patients, the astronaut Alan Shepard, to fly to the moon, and perhaps his greatest achievement—the first cochlear implant, allowing so many to leave their silent worlds. Dr. House gives readers an inside look at his development of this revolutionary device, the significant opposition he faced in trying to make it a clinical reality and his theory about how cochlear implants really work. He describes his life’s stories, ranging from experiences with the entertainment industry and legal system to his travels around the world. Finally, we hear from many doctors he helped to train and grateful cochlear implant patients, among others.
“Dr. House . . . has developed more new concepts in otology than almost any other single person in history . . .” [American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation 1995 Distinguished Award for Contributions in Clinical Otology]
The Struggles of a Medical Innovator Cochlear Implants and Other Ear Surgeries eBook William F House
This is a terrific resource for anyone who wishes to learn more about the life and work of Dr. House. Indeed, he was a brilliant man. So few texts exist that detail the history of hearing science—and while this book focuses specifically on the development of neurotology and cochlear implantation, the author mentions several sources that the interested reader can further investigate. With no offense to Dr. House, for whom I have the utmost respect, the book is disjointed, choppy, and poorly written. But, I want to emphasize that it is well worth reading. Dr. House himself recognizes in the first chapter that writing is not his strength. Luckily, this is not a novel, nor is it intended to captivate the disinterested. Anyone who wishes to learn more about the field will derive pleasure and value from this quick and informative read.Product details

The Struggles of a Medical Innovator Cochlear Implants and Other Ear Surgeries eBook William F House Reviews
A must read for any ENT Doctor, as well as those with an interest in Cochlear implants. He made so many contributions to the field that most take for granted and could not imagine doing with out! He touched lives throughout the world and lived the motto "For the World to Hear." Truly a great man.
It is one of those rare books which helps one understand how the field of otology and neurotology has developed over the years..
It is a testament to the contributions made by a single person.. inspiring!!
A remarkable story about an incredible medical innovator who battled the established researchers to produce the first cochlear implant.
I am not of the medical profession but found this to be a well written, informative book - and difficult to put down once I picked it up. I believe anyone with an interest in innovation would deeply appreciate Dr. House's story. He was, without a doubt, one of a kind.
Perhaps once in a hundred years there strides on the human stage an individual who does more to bring change and alter the way we think of disease so that it revolutionized the way we take of patients. William House was destined to be one such genius. The book throws light onto the thought process that went not only into techniques that have changed the performance of modern ear and brain microsurgery. He was able to reduce the mortality rates of a dreaded benign brain tumor called an acoustic neuroma fro 40 percent to well under 0.4 percent. This was a hundred fold decrease. His popularizing the surgical microscope and introduction of techniques meticulously thought out and executed on cadavers have made the exceptional, routine in the operating room. Among others he made and used the cochlear implant and using this device was able to restore sound to the profoundly deaf.
The book also demonstrates the personal side of a very private, quiet and humble man. His sensitivity shines through in his writings. A tribute by his daughter and the famous audiologist Dr. Karen Berliner who was involved in the early programming of cochlear implants in adults and children gives the reader a ring side seat which gives one the feel for how this technology was developed and how a leap was made from the laboratory to the human. Tributes and stories written by scores of ear surgeons that he trained lend a a human dimension which reflects a truly remarkable teacher, doctor and human being. A final chapter describes the authors thoughts on how he thinks cochlear implant work.
The book is a great story of a remarkable human being who fought against all odds and won. He humbly acknowledges the people who stood by him in his meteoric rise. Called the father of skull-base story his is the story that might make a great movie his own failings and his formative career and where it went. For all his achievements it is surprising that he has not received the Nobel Prize, I recommend this book very highly. Every medical student should be asked to read it
